With nearly 30 years of experience in the automotive experience I have been privileged and lucky enough to work with many great people and on some fantastic projects and brands. I started with a chance job grooming (valeting) cars for a couple of weeks when I was in between jobs (I was 23 at the time). I reluctantly became a car sales exec at the same company...and realised I loved it. While selling cars by day I was doing my post grad at night in marketing (my true passion). Working for a big dealer group was fascinating and frustrating. I moved to another bigger dealer group and had my first taste of consulting - as a facilitator for a change programme the group was running - while selling cars of course. This lead to promotion and my last true retail role, as a brand manager for SEAT in Bolton, UK for the same group. I was encouraged to apply for a role at SEAT UK, but didn't get it - but got a role at Skoda UK instead, in a strategic consulting role. That really was the starting point for me when everything came together. Cars, retail, consulting, and marketing and of course an underdog brand. What a great combo! It was confirmation I had found my calling.

So now, hybrid can mean a vehicle that cannot move electrically at all, can drive electrically most of the time or can be plugged...

The golden era of used imports from Japan is over. What is next?
This article was written just prior to the government watering down the CCS standard under urgency. There is no doubt that used car importers and used dealers are having a tough time. The New Zealand economy is sluggish, especially in Auckland and Wellington; sourcing stock out of Japan is tough, with increased demand from other countries and the impacts of the clean car standard (CCS) all making sourcing affordable cars difficult. The result is more expensive older cars with higher...

Your pathway to a better 2026
If 2025 was a tough year for your business, perhaps it is time to look at the way you do your business improvement and planning rounds for 2026. For many dealers this is an exercise about financials, whereas it could be a transformative exercise to engage with key managers and to set bold goals. A plan in your head is nothing more than an idea, and yet the best business plan is one that is developed with your team. With this in mind, below is a seven-step plan  to assist with planning that I...
